DOCTOR ZHIVAGO is a sweeping musical romance set during the final days of Czarist Russia, the First World War and the chaos of the Russian revolution. Raised as an aristocrat, Yurii Zhivago is a political idealist, physician, and poet whose life is tossed by the tides of history as he is torn between a life with his devoted wife, Tonia Gromeko, and the passionate and mysterious Lara Guishar. Zhivago is. not along in his yearnings for Lara, competing for her affections with the young revolutionary Pasha Antipov, and the aristocrat Viktor Komarovsky. DOCTOR ZHIVAGO celebrates the strength of love and art, in the face of political oppression ad the horrors of war.
DOCTOR ZHIVAGO premiered at La Jolla Playhouse in 2006. Before opening on Broadway in 2015 at the Broadway Theatre, DOCTOR ZHIVAGO was produced for commercial audiences around the world including Sydney and Melbourne, Australia (2011), Seoul, South Korea (2012), Helsinki, Finland (2014), and Malmo, Sweden (2014). During the 2015 Broadway award season, Tam Mutu received a Drama League Award nomination for the role of “Yurii Zhivago,” and Paul Alexander Nolan received an Outer Critics Circle Award nomination for the role of “Pasha Antipov/Strelnikov.” DOCTOR ZHIVAGO closed on Broadway in May 2015 after 26 previews and 23 performances; however, the story has been seen by Polish audiences since 2017 and had a brief UK concert premiere in 2019.
